Nepali Diaspora in Australia

The Nepali Diaspora in Australia report, prepared by the Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS) in collaboration with the Australian Embassy, examines the rapid growth and evolving role of the Nepali community in Australia. Over the past decade, the diaspora has expanded significantly, emerging as one of the fastest-growing migrant groups and an important bridge between Nepal and Australia.

The report provides a comprehensive analysis of the demographic and socio-economic profile of the Nepali diaspora, highlighting their contributions across multiple sectors. It goes beyond traditional perspectives on remittances to explore the broader role of the diaspora in entrepreneurship, professional engagement, trade linkages, cultural exchange, and knowledge transfer.

In addition, the study underscores the strong and enduring connections that the diaspora maintains with Nepal through investment, tourism, philanthropy, and wider people-to-people relations. It also identifies key opportunities for strengthening Nepal–Australia relations through enhanced trade, investment, skills exchange, and policy engagement.

By offering evidence-based insights, the report aims to inform policymakers, development partners, and stakeholders on how to better leverage diaspora engagement for Nepal’s socio-economic development while fostering long-term bilateral collaboration.
