- Partners: The Asia Foundation and Embassy of Nepal in the United States
- Year: 2023
This study was conducted in response to the request of the Embassy of Nepal in the US to strengthen its relationship with Nepali diaspora in the US. The study explored opportunities and aspirations of Nepalis in the US to better engage in, invest in and contribute to Nepal’s development. This study aimed to provide evidence to influence policy changes regarding diaspora engagement for the Nepal Government. It also identified sectors attractive for Nepali diaspora to invest in, constraints and challenges in making such investments, and policy changes required to incentivize them to invest and transfer technology. Dissemination of the study findings was carried out through virtual events and meetings, and social media mobilization.
Methodology of the study included both primary and secondary data. Secondary data reviewed the census and other official demographics reports and trend analysis, diaspora reports, databases from diaspora associations, embassies, and other existing sources, registries, and rosters. Primary data included a set of structured survey questions disseminated online to an estimated 2000 respondents across the 50 states in the US. Additionally, the study conducted a series of Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with key stakeholders.
