The Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS) is conducting a confidential survey as part of its “Nepali Diaspora in Australia” initiative. The study aims to understand the experiences, motivations, and contributions of the Nepali Diaspora in Australia.
The objective of this study is to create a comprehensive understanding of the Nepali diaspora in Australia and to explore their potential explore their potential to support Nepal’s development through increased trade and investment and create closer bilateral ties. Specific objectives include:
- Mapping the Nepali Diaspora in Australia:
• Create a detailed demographic and socio-economic profile of the Nepali diaspora, showcasing its diversity and integration within Australian society.
• Document the diaspora’s contributions to Australia’s cultural, economic, and social fabric. - Exploring Bilateral Contributions:
• Assess the diaspora’s potential to contribute to Nepal’s development through investments, remittances, and knowledge sharing, and facilitate market linkages/access, including sectors of potential.
• Explore opportunities to enhance Nepal-Australia trade and investment exchanges. - Designing Engagement Mechanisms:
• Propose sustainable mechanisms for engaging the Nepali diaspora in Australia to promote bilateral interests, including facilitating Nepali goods exports to Australia. These include students (especially second-generation Nepali diaspora) exchange programmes, and exchange of teachers, trade professionals and businesses. Also encourage policies and platforms for trade exchange and financial investment including diaspora bonds.
• Identify institutional frameworks or platforms to facilitate long-term collaboration.
Findings from the survey will help inform policies and strengthen Nepal-Australia relations in areas such as trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
